Superb white Carrara marble sculpture representing a vulture preparing to spread its wings by the Belgian artist of Italian origin Antonio Amorgasti and his son Marcel.
The technical and aesthetic quality of this work testifies to the exceptional know-how of this dynasty of sculptors (Antonio’s brother, Gustave, was also a talented sculptor).
This piece, dated « 1937 », was presented at the Animal Art Exhibition in Brussels in the same year.
Antonio Amorgasti was born in Pisa in 1880 and died in Antwerp in 1942. He was the younger brother of the sculptor August Amorgasti, a moulder in the workshops of Josué Dupon and Edward Deckers.
He designed ornamental works of a high technical standard and medallion portraits in Averbode, Veerle and Geel. He also depicts workers at work, typical subjects of the time.

Spazzacamino by Donato Barcaglia
Spazza Camino by Donato Barcaglia
The present marble sculpture exemplifies the preoccupation of Barcaglia with beautifully carved and highly realistic genre subjects.
The present marble exemplifies Barcaglia’s preoccupation with beautifully carved and highly realistic genre subjects. A poor boy in worn clothes with his handmade broom under the left arm and a scraper under his right arm, takes his lunch break. There is a piece of bread close to him on the couch. Meanwhile he sews a loose button on his vest.
Details:
The realistic depicted worn clothes with holes and repairs. His far too small shoes where his heels pierce. The sculptor’s virtuoso treatment of marble is showcased in the naturalistic detail of the boy’s clothes and shoes, and the moss growing on the base. A variant of the model, in which the boy is polishing his shoe, is a popular feature in Paddington Gardens in Marylebone.
Donato Barcaglia (1849 – 1930), born in Pavia, trained in Milan and Rome. During a period of outstanding technical accomplishment in marble carving, Barcaglia was renowned for the exceptional quality of his work in this medium. The last vestiges of neoclassicism which influenced his early work were soon replaced by a personal form of verismo. Following early successes such as his Vendemmiatore, which he sculpted at the tender age of seventeen and which was installed in the Palazzo Reale in Milan, the sculptor exhibited to great acclaim in Europe and America. His work brought him to exhibitions as far afield as Boston, Philadelphia, and Buenos Aires. Far from turning his back on his native Italy, Barcaglia executed several public monuments for Milan and its surrounding cities.

Mother and Child by Valentine Bender
MOTHER AND CHILD BY VALENTINE BENDER
Description : Marble sculpture by the Belgian artist Valentine Bender (1884-1974). This sculpture’s highly sensitive design creates the illusion this marble was modelled by warm hands. The soft volumes of the contrast with the rock upon which the sitting mother dips her foot in the water. A tree trunk supports her right, as she holds a towel in her left hand. She is whispering to the small child at her side.
The Belgian sculptress Valentine BENDER (Brussels 1884-Uccle 1947)
Valentine Bender was a talented sculptress who lived in the shadow of her teacher and eventually her husband Egide Rombaux (1865-1942), but she still managed to build up a remarkable oeuvre of her own. She produced life size sculptures in bronze, terracotta, wood and marble, dedicated exclusively to the human figure. With the exception of classical busts, it is especially her figures of saints, children and full-length nudes that deserve attention.
