Description : This marble sculpture by Thomas Vinçotte represents Andromeda from the Greek mythology. Daughter of the Ethiopian king and his wife Cassiopeia. Because of Cassiopeia’s jealousy, Andromeda is chained naked to a rock intended to be eaten by a sea monster. She finally was saved from death by Perseus and became his wife.

The Belgian sculptor Thomas Vinçotte (Borgerhout 1850 – Schaarbeek 1925)

Thomas Vinçotte (Borgerhout 1850 – Schaarbeek 1925) was a multifaceted sculptor who worked in all possible genres and sizes. He worked in Florence and Paris and became famous with his « Giotto » which is exhibitied in the Fine Arts museum in Ghent. He was the official sculptor of the King Leopold II. Works of Vinçotte can be found in the museums of Antwerp and Brussels.
