The sculpture depicts a beautiful naked young woman rising in the morning and stretching her arms and legs. The subject, caught in the languor of waking, allows the artist to display an acute command of movement and anatomy.
The work is distinguished by a strong feeling of power and expression. The treatment is remarkably free and draws all its charm from the beauty of the forms; here Charpentier reveals his command of perfect harmony, the mark of one of the most remarkable masters of the sculpture of his time.
The original marble, standing 238.5 cm high, belongs to the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Arras, while a reduced plaster model of the present composition is exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Tournai, in Belgium. The base of the work is made of Arabescato marble.

Bollène, 1858 — 1924, Paris
Born in Bollène, in the Vaucluse, Félix-Maurice Charpentier studied at the School of Fine Arts under the direction of the sculptor Cavelier. Having completed his studies, he exhibited regularly at the Parisian Salons and was decorated Officer of the Legion of Honour.
Numbered among the most remarkable masters of the sculpture of his time, his technique is distinguished by a strong feeling of power and expression. He is today represented in several museums in France and was the author of public monuments, including works for the Grand Palais and the façade of the Gare de Lyon in Paris.
