Standing Bear by Maximilien-Louis Fiot (Touraine, 1886–1953) is a striking bronze sculpture that powerfully captures the raw energy of a wild animal in motion. Depicted upright on its hind legs, with jaws open and ears pinned back, the bear exudes a dynamic presence—ready to confront, defend, or impress any onlooker who dares to come close. The artist’s meticulous attention to anatomical structure and muscular detail emphasizes the animal’s latent strength, making the piece a vivid expression of natural power.

Fiot, a French sculptor renowned for his dedication to animalier art, demonstrates exceptional technical skill in his rendering of textures. The fur appears lifelike, animated by his sensitive modelling, while the subtle movement in the bear’s posture brings the figure to life. The open mouth, complete with finely sculpted teeth and tongue, heightens the sense of alertness and intensity. The patina, carefully chosen to evoke the tones of a bear’s natural coat, adds depth and realism to the bronze.

This rare cast is one of only two known versions of the model, making it highly collectible. The present piece is the final sand-cast edition, distinct from the original plaster, and has been preserved with care by the same French family for three generations.

Standing Bear exemplifies Fiot’s artistic philosophy: to capture not only the physical likeness of animals, but also their spirit and expressive presence. It stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of early 20th-century French animalier sculpture—where realism, emotional resonance, and respect for the natural world converge.
