JEF LAMBEAUX
(Antwerp, 1852-1908, Brussels)
Lambeaux embodies Belgian sculpture in all its dramatic intensity.
Jef Lambeaux was one of Belgium’s most dynamic and original sculptors of the late 19th century. Born in Antwerp in 1852, he trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and quickly gained recognition for his technical mastery and expressive power. Inspired by Rubens, Jordaens, and the imaginative force of Antoine Wiertz, Lambeaux developed a distinctive sculptural language marked by audacity, sensuality, and theatrical flair.
He produced an extensive body of monumental works, often portraying muscular male figures in dramatic motion—wrestlers, archers, centaurs, and mythological abductions—capturing both energy and emotion. Equally adept in marble and bronze, Lambeaux excelled at scenes of violence, eroticism, and psychological tension, balancing anatomical precision with artistic intensity.
Among his most celebrated creations is Les Passions humaines, a monumental white marble relief (8 x 12 meters) rich in allegory and emotional charge, which stirred both admiration and controversy. His public commissions include expressive portraits and group compositions found in Brussels and his native city of Antwerp.
Lambeaux’s career reached a turning point in 1882, when the Museum of Antwerp acquired Le Baiser. He became a leading figure in Belgian sculpture, with over 150 known works. His bold, often provocative compositions continue to fascinate art historians and collectors alike. His iconic Brabo Fountain (1887), standing in front of Antwerp’s Town Hall, remains a powerful symbol of the city’s artistic legacy.
